Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for Fort Lauderdale — 18 Minutes South via A1A

Fort Lauderdale residents who want world-champion Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instruction are 18 minutes south of us via A1A. Winners Jiu-Jitsu Academy sits on Collins Avenue in Sunny Isles Beach — the scenic coast route avoids the I-95 chaos most BJJ-curious drivers default to. Head Coach Jonatas Gurgel is a 2x World Cup Champion, and our academy has been training South Florida families since 2012.

A1A south is the secret. Most Fort Lauderdale residents who consider BJJ default to looking at I-95, see the rush-hour times, and stop. The A1A route from downtown Fort Lauderdale to our academy is 18 minutes off-peak, 22 in light rush — through Hollywood Beach, past Hallandale, into Sunny Isles. It's a one-road drive with one stoplight cluster. Many of our Fort Lauderdale adults specifically train at our 7 PM slot because A1A clears around 6:30, making the drive home almost as fast as the drive in.

We are not in Fort Lauderdale and we won't pretend otherwise. There are competent BJJ academies inside the city — if your decision criterion is "closest gym with mats," start there. We are the choice when the criterion is "best instruction I can reach in under 25 minutes." Coach Jonatas is a 2x World Cup Champion (2004, 2005), 3x Pan American Champion, 4x Brazilian National Champion, and 5-0 as a professional MMA fighter. That résumé is rare anywhere in South Florida; in your direct radius, it's unmatched.

Our Fort Lauderdale students tend to fall into two patterns. The first: adults with prior martial arts experience — usually striking, sometimes wrestling — who want to add ground game with a coach whose pedigree justifies the trip. The second: parents who picked up their kid from a closer school once or twice, weren't impressed with the kids program structure, and decided the drive was worth the difference. Our kids program ladder runs from age 3 (Tiny Warriors) through age 12 (Full Winners) with separate kickboxing classes for ages 8–13.

Free parking on-site is rarer than you'd think on this stretch of Collins — most beachfront academies park you in a metered lot or a building garage. Our space at 17100 Collins (Suite 201) has dedicated parking, which matters when you're fitting BJJ in around a workday.

Why Fort Lauderdale

Why Fort Lauderdale residents choose Winners

18 minutes via A1A, not the I-95 mess

A1A south is the scenic, low-traffic option — one road, predictable times, and the drive home after evening class is genuinely pleasant. Most Fort Lauderdale students discover this on their first trial visit and immediately stop considering closer options.

World-champion head coach

Jonatas Gurgel: 2x IBJJF World Cup Champion, 3x Pan American Champion, 4x Brazilian National Champion, 3x World Championship bronze medalist, 5-0 professional MMA. The pedigree justifies a 20-minute drive — Fort Lauderdale academies have many strong coaches, but this résumé is unmatched in your radius.

Free on-site parking

Rare on this stretch of Collins. Most beachfront gyms park you in a paid garage or a metered lot. We have dedicated parking — which matters when you're squeezing BJJ in around work.

MMA-friendly culture

Coach Jonatas's undefeated MMA record and ongoing relationship with the wider South Florida MMA community make this a natural home for Fort Lauderdale students with striking backgrounds who want to add ground game.

Fort Lauderdale FAQ

Questions from Fort Lauderdale residents

What's the actual drive time from Fort Lauderdale?+

About 18 minutes from downtown Fort Lauderdale via A1A south, 22 in light rush. The A1A route is consistently faster and more pleasant than I-95 in either direction; most Fort Lauderdale students discover this on their first trial visit.

Why drive 18 minutes when Fort Lauderdale has its own BJJ academies?+

For most people, you shouldn't — start with a closer option if convenience is the top priority. Our Fort Lauderdale students are typically here because they specifically want a 2x World Cup Champion head coach, and decided that pedigree justifies the drive. A free trial is the cleanest way to compare for yourself.

Is there free parking?+

Yes, dedicated on-site parking at 17100 Collins. Rare on this stretch of A1A — most beachfront gyms put you in a paid lot or a building garage.

Do you have many Fort Lauderdale students?+

A meaningful share of our adult class is Fort Lauderdale-based. The 7 PM and Saturday 11 AM slots are particularly popular with Fort Lauderdale commuters because the drive times are most favorable.

Is the kids program worth the drive from Fort Lauderdale?+

It depends on what you're evaluating. Our kids program ladder (ages 3, 5, 8, plus kickboxing) is more structured than most generalist martial arts schools in either market. If structure and age-appropriate progression matter to you, yes — many Fort Lauderdale parents make the drive specifically for our 8–12 program.

Do you offer kickboxing alongside BJJ?+

Yes — adult kickboxing Tuesday/Thursday 7:30 PM, and a separate kids kickboxing program for ages 8–13. Many Fort Lauderdale adults pair one BJJ class with one kickboxing class per week.

Are private lessons available?+

Yes, by appointment with Coach Jonatas or a senior coach. Privates are popular with Fort Lauderdale students whose work hours don't align with our group class schedule.
